BRAIN CHAMBER

Aoife Dunne

BRAIN CHAMBER, is a seven-part digital performance created by artist Aoife Dunne.

It playfully explores the idea of being trapped by technology, whereby the viewer will question the pseudo or implied connectedness fabricated by our digital devices. With its bold and colourful sensuousness, the work unfolds not only the fantasies but the anxieties associated with the technological takeover.

Being attached to a device that affords instantaneous connectivity, virtual activities and information is changing how we engage with our environment and our perception of self. We are able to conduct and maintain relationships in a virtual world, while simultaneously existing in a physical space. We become present in multiple places contemporaneously, challenging our ability to be fully present in any one place. This communicational change facilitates the occupation of spaces and places way beyond our personal sphere, and it poses the seemingly simple question – “Where am I?”

Digital installation artist Aoife Dunne creates immersive environments fusing sculpture, video, sound, performance, technology, and costume. Fuelled by a fascination with digital and material culture, Dunne’s idiosyncratic touch is laced with references to the surreal and hyper-real. Exploring an ethos rooted in post-pop and post-internet, Dunne’s work envelops audiences in abstract, detail-driven virtual and physical realms. Her multi-dimensional approach to crafting large-scale, experiential work is informed by a diverse creative background steeped in dance, performance, fashion, and musical composition. Bulldozing through the boundaries of what conventional exhibitions entail, Dunne reaps continent-crossing acclaim for her inimitable aesthetic and site-specific, colourfully chaotic work.

Aoife Dunne studied Fine Art Media at The National College of Art and Design and received her BFA in 2016. Since graduating, Dunne has held numerous exhibitions internationally, including The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, The Royal Academy of Arts London, Irish Museum of Modern Art, and upcoming solo shows in New York, Puerto Rico, London, Paris, and Tokyo.
